Antique Tibetan Large Mixed Metal, Turquoise Bead, 109th Mala Guru Bead, 8.5cm, 43.5 Grams
When Tibetans recite the mani mantra, they are in effect saying
“All is well. Everything is perfect. Wisdom and compassion uphold every atom!”
ANTIQUE LARGE TIBETAN MIXED METAL 109th BEAD ON A MALA - Called Sumeru, Bindu, Stupa or Guru Bead.
The bead is in the original form of the Caitya, or Stupa with the pinnacle modelled after a Lotus Flower, and is 8.5cm.
It has been cast with a heavy mixed metal alloy, and has a six lotus petal final inset with turquoise cabochons. It has a metal rod down the centre of the bead for stringing.
Buddhist prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited whilst meditating. They are similar to other forms of prayer beads used in various world religions; thus some call this tool the Buddhist rosary.
In Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally the mala of 108 beads are used. Some practitioners use malas of 21 or 28 beads for doing prostrations. Doing one 108-bead mala counts as the 108 worldly sins in Buddhist doctrine.
The 109th bead on a mala is called the sumeru, bindu, stupa, or guru bead. Counting should always begin with a bead next to the sumeru. If more than one mala of repetitions is to be done, one changes directions when reaching the sumeru 109th bead rather than crossing it.
It is in the shape of a Lotus Blossom Stupa:
Also known as Stupa of Heaped Lotuses or Birth of the Sugata Stupa, this stupa refers to the birth of the Buddha. "At birth Buddha took seven steps in each of the four directions", (East, South, West and North). In each direction lotuses sprang, symbolizing the Four Immeasurables: love, compassion, joy and equanimity.
The four steps (the four sections on the bead) of the basis of this stupa is circular, and it is decorated with lotus-petal designs.
