Antique Indian Snake Chain Belt or Necklace, Round, 4 mm, High Grade Silver, 68.8 Grams, 31 1/4″(79 cm)
Antique, dating to early 20th century, genuine, solid woven, high grade silver, 4 mm round flexible snake chain belt from Karnataka, South West India. This is the older type of handmade chain, not the newer machine made chains that are readily available these days.
This snake chain is long enough at 79 cm (31 1/4") to also be worn as a choker necklace wrapped twice around the neck.
It can also be worn as a long chain with a pendant. The diameter of the loop ends is 7.4 mm at the widest point which is important to know when choosing a pendant to slip on.
The snake chain has a particularly finely woven silver herringbone pattern and the weave has worn smooth from so much wearing over the years. It has such a wonderful patina.
There are no breaks in the silver wire chain. I have detailed in the listing photos that there are a few slight kinks in the chain but does not detract when wearing.
The technique used to make this type of Indian silver snake chain is that the finished closely braided silver strands of wire were drawn through a draw plate, becoming condensed and smooth. Through wear over the years it becomes smooth and supple.
It has silver end caps and the loop in loop hooked closing.
