Antique Indian Amulet, Hanuman, c. 1800’s, High Grade Silver, 28 Grams
RARE - An excellent large 18th to 19th century high grade silver amulet pendant.
The amulet pendant is in the shape of an arrowhead form and die-stamped with threea decorative bales. The silver amulet border has been added and floral units covering the joins.
This is a rare example of an amulet - most probably originally from the Punjab, a state bordering Pakistan and is the heart of India’s Sikh community.
The amulet originally contained a previous deity or a symbol associated with a deity which has since been cut out of the silver centre front sheet.
I have attached a listing photo at the end of another amulet from the sale source detailing Guru Nanak (rare Halo) is seated on an asana (carpet) under a tree with two companions: Mardana, a Muslim musician playing a rehab, and Bala Sindhu, a Hindu, who holds a chowri (fly whisk) - also a Temple Token depicting Guru Nanak.
Guru Nanak has been removed - and Hanuman from part of another old amulet has been cut out and soldered over Guru Nanak.
Hanuman is now flanked by Guru Nanak's two companions - Bala Sindhu and Mardana.
Hanuman is the celebrated celestial monkey chief, and an ardent devotee of Rama, a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana. Hanuman is an incarnation of the divine, whose fate it is to aide the hero Rama in the struggle against the demon king Ravana. His exploits are much celebrated in a variety of religious and cultural traditions, particularly in Hinduism.
Hanuman is depicted within the shape of a yoni - the origin of life, or leaf of the sacred fig tree with the bottom pointing ovule, flying through the air to bring the healing Himalayan herbs to cure the wounded on the Sri Lanka battlefield, as related in the Ramayana.
Hanuman. The Monkey god is the most popular form of Talisman for Luck, Health, and Good Fortune amongst the Hindus.
Hanuman is holding in one hand and his bow and arrow in the other.
The amulet has been strung on a new black Indian traditional handmade cotton thread cord. It has a looped end for closing.
The amulet has been silver tested for high grade silver.
This is an original old worn collection piece . I have cleaned the amulet to highlight the beautiful details of the workmanship.
