Antique Sri Lanka Necklace, 22ct Silver Gilt Beads, Ceylon, Sinhalese, Length 58 cm (27 1/2″), 46 Grams
The jewellery of Sri Lanka constitutes a distinctive subgroup within the context of Indian ornamentation.
Quote: "The eclecticism and technical virtuosity shown in the jewellery of the regions are simply inconceivable. Is it not said that Sri Lanka is "the tear of India"? The granulation and filigree attain perfection in this beautifully wrought necklace".
This is an early 20th century, silver gilt necklace from Sri Lanka, (formerly Ceylon) and from the old capital city of Kandy in the island's central highlands.
The necklace has three faceted bicone graded in size open end beads which are joined by interlocking and ending with 2 cone beads and three decorative small silver gilt beads.
The Sinhalese necklace is decorated with fine filigree, granulation and decorative silver wire. The filigree and granulation decoration is beautifully executed on these fine beads. The silver gilt beads and chain tested 92.5 % silver approx. and 22ct gilt.
The necklace has 21.5 cm (8 1/2") silver gilt side chain extensions with herringbone plaited cords with a 1.8 cm (5/8") "S" clip for closing.
The necklace is in good condition. I have not cleaned the necklace and there is some surface residue that can be removed.
This type of Sri Lankan necklace is very hard to find today.
