Vintage Indian Silver Choker Necklace, Toda Tribe, Tamil Nadu ,South India, Solid High Grade Silver Beads,193.8 Grams
This is a vintage, mid 20th century, solid, one piece high grade silver torque (hansuli), choker necklace. The term hansuli refers to the collar bone, where it rests. The ring is flexible with hook fastening at the back opening to allow for placing around the neck. (I have tried it on and it easily slips around the neck).
The ring is covered with heavy high grade (sterling) 8mm silver cornerless cube beads and beaded spacer beads. The ring is quite flexible and soft as it is low grade silver content and can be easily re shaped to personal wearing requirements.
This necklace is worn by the Toda tribe of Tamil Nadu, south India. The Toda people are a small pastoral tribal community who live on the isolated Nilgiri plateau.
The neck ring is quite heavy at 193.8 grams and comfortable for wearing. It has a lovely soft worn patina.
