Antique Indian Amulet, Tree of Life Amulet

Antique Indian Amulet, Tree of Life Amulet

This is a late 19th or early 20th century high grade silver amulet pendant, beautifully and very finely die-stamped with two bales and a separate silver backing plate, worn by the tribal people of Rajasthan, northern India. There is a decorative final at the base and floral units and a silver bar extension down the back for extra support.

The amulet pendant is in the shape of the arrowhead form, representing the leaf of the sacred pipal tree. The image is of the Tree of Life in the centre (a symbol of fertility), flanked by two sets of peacocks guarding the Tree of Life. To the Muslims the motif represents everlasting life: to the Hindus the tree supports the Universe and preserves life.

A quite heavy original antique worn collection piece in good condition. It has been strung on a handmade Indian black cotton adjustable cord with a slip bead to adjust the length.
